An athelete's time for perspective- Winning? What purpose does playing sports have? Aside from the obvious health reasons, sports allow a person to perform the best that they can for an audience that gets pleasure from that performance. Should the athlete also feel the same pleasure? If you were a pianist and practiced forever without ever having an audience that enjoyed your music would you feel the same about it? If you are an athlete and you practiced forever without ever having a single fan (the audience) see you play would you feel the same about it? My perspective is that your performance whether you win or loose the match fulfills the purpose of playing your sport. The drama, the emotions, the tears and cheers felt by you and your fans is what makes playing the sport worth it. As in all things in life, growth is natural so the fans come to expect more and the performer sets goals that usually satisfy those expectations. So parents, allow yourself to revel in your child’s performances for what they are, you can’t jinx them by watching but you can snub them by putting an expectation on them that they may not be able to fulfill at that time- winning.
